Our Philosophy

Estimating with Confidence

A Manifesto

Every project begins with a number.

That number influences whether a project proceeds, whether funding is approved, whether contracts are signed and, ultimately, whether a business makes or loses money.

Yet behind every estimate is something far more important than a spreadsheet.

A person.

Someone who has gathered drawings, challenged assumptions, chased quotations, questioned production rates, balanced risk and made hundreds of decisions—often with incomplete information and impossible deadlines.

Estimating has never been about predicting the future with perfect accuracy.

It has always been about making the best possible decisions with the information available.

Unfortunately, many estimates are built around a dangerous assumption:

“I hope I’ve remembered everything.”

Hope is not a review process.

Confidence is.

What confidence really means

Estimating with confidence does not mean believing your estimate is perfect.

It means understanding:

  • what you know,
  • what you don’t know,
  • what assumptions matter most,
  • where the biggest risks lie,
  • and how to explain your decisions when they are challenged.

The most respected estimators are not those who never make mistakes.

They are the ones who uncover mistakes before they become expensive.

Estimators don’t just estimate.

They investigate.

They question.

They compare.

They challenge.

They simplify complexity.

They connect engineering, construction, commercial strategy and risk into a single recommendation.

A great estimate is never simply a collection of quantities and rates.

It is a carefully reasoned argument.

Our mission

Estimating.info exists for one purpose:

To help estimators prepare better estimates and make better decisions with confidence.

Not through theory alone.

Not through software alone.

But through practical knowledge developed from real projects.

Every guide, calculator, template and AI tool on this website is designed to answer one simple question:

Will this help someone produce a better estimate?

If the answer is no…

it doesn’t belong here.

Experience is valuable.

But experience shouldn’t be locked away.

Too much estimating knowledge disappears when experienced estimators retire, change industries or simply become too busy to mentor others.

We believe practical estimating knowledge should be documented.

Shared.

Improved.

Passed on.

Because every estimator deserves access to the lessons that previously took decades to learn.

A different approach

Most estimating resources teach software.

Others teach formulas.

Some teach standards.

All of those are important.

But software doesn’t replace judgement.

Spreadsheets don’t identify hidden risks.

Artificial Intelligence cannot replace professional responsibility.

The best estimators ask better questions.

That is the skill we want to develop.

Introducing the 10-Step Estimate Confidence Review™

Everything on Estimating.info is built around one framework.

The 10-Step Estimate Confidence Review™.

It is not a checklist for producing estimates.

It is a framework for reviewing them.

Each step asks a different question.

Have we captured the scope?

Can we defend our productivity?

Does the programme agree with the estimate?

Have commercial risks been qualified?

What questions will management ask?

Can we explain every major assumption?

Confidence isn’t created by luck.

It is created by systematically asking the right questions before someone else does.

Our promise

We won’t publish content simply to fill a website.

Every article should be something worth bookmarking.

Every calculator should save time.

Every template should improve consistency.

Every AI tool should help people think – not replace thinking.

If we can’t make something genuinely useful…

we won’t publish it.

Join us

Whether you’re estimating your first project…

reviewing a billion-dollar infrastructure proposal…

or leading an estimating team…

our goal is the same.

To help you walk into every estimate review knowing you’ve asked the questions that matter.

Because the goal isn’t simply to estimate.

The goal is to…

Estimate with Confidence.

What You Can Expect

Everything published on Estimating.info is designed to support one or more of the following:

  • Practical estimating guides
  • Time-saving calculators
  • Downloadable templates
  • AI-powered estimating assistants
  • Estimate review frameworks
  • Commercial and risk guidance
  • Lessons learned from real projects

If it helps estimators produce better estimates with greater confidence, it belongs here.

Our Commitment

We believe knowledge should be shared, not hidden.

We believe practical experience should be documented before it is lost.

We believe better estimates lead to better projects.

Above all, we believe confidence comes from preparation – not guesswork.
